The theatrical traditions of Sátoraljaújhely reach back until the 19th century. Even the famous Hungarian actress, Róza Déryné Széppataki played in the city at the beginning of the 1830s. Located in the Színház lane, the first theater was active up until 1928.
At that time the local audience called for a modern theater, and the new building was inaugurated in 1929, which is today’s Lajos Kossuth Community Center and the Kálmán Latabár Theater. The theater hall is the home of regular plays and concerts, and also the famous Hegyalja Folk Ensemble.
