Painter and wood-cutter Géza Lavotha (1926-1999) was born in Erdőbénye. He studied in the Teacher’s Training Colleges of Sárospatak and Eger. After graduating in geography and arts, he studied adult education.
He lived in Sárospatak for nearly two decades, and later he moved back to Erdőbénye. He founded the Erdőbénye Small Gallery, making several photos, paintings, lino-cuts, wood-cuts, reliefs and sculptures. Lavotha was a public writer as well.
He also created a lot of sculptures depicting historical figures, made of stone or wood. For his life of work, he received the Pro Urbe Award, and became an honorary citizen of Erdőbénye.
