The town’s once significant Jewish population maintained a local yeshiva, and invited rabbi-scientists to teach in the school.
One of the most famous among these was Rabbi Elazar Loew. Rabbi Loew was a remarkable intellect of his era. His works had a great effect on Hungarian academic and theological life. His tomb, together with the grave of Rabbi Arye Loeb Lipschutz is in the fenced and maintained Jewish cemetery.
