Hungarian Calvary

Sátoraljaújhely

Hungarian Calvary is an exceptional sight in the Carpathian Basin. The idea of building a monument came from a 1935 public ceremony, when the 100th national flag was raised in Sátoraljaújhely.

The route from the city center along the Zsólyomka Stream to Szár Mountain contains the 14 stations of Hungarian Calvary. The monument complex was built in 1936 and renovated in 1990. It commemorates the once-Hungarian territories lost in the Treaty of Trianon. The shape of the Saint Stephen Chapel on the top of the mountain symbolizes the Holy Crown of Hungary.
